It was the last HSV range before the all-new VE platform reset the game entirely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The VZ Commodore was the final evolution of the VT\/VX\/VY platform, and by the time HSV got hold of it, the chassis was well and truly sorted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Holden Special Vehicles used the VZ as a final refinement exercise\u2014tightening suspension geometry, improving steering response, and pushing the LS-based V8 engines harder than ever before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The VZ HSV range was extensive, covering everything from accessible performance sedans to flagship muscle sedans and utes that have since become modern classics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">ships before forced induction would eventually become central to HSV\u2019s performance strategy in later years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The VZ HSV generation is particularly interesting because it sits right on the transition between two key engines in GM\u2019s LS family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5.7L LS1 V8<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Early VZ HSV models carried the familiar LS1, producing around 297kW in HSV tune.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While it was already well-developed by this point, HSV calibration gave it sharper throttle response and improved mid-range torque. It delivered that classic early-2000s V8 character\u2014slightly unruly, a little rough around the edges, and very rewarding when driven hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6.0L LS2 V8 (Later Models)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The introduction of the LS2 was a major step forward. With outputs around 307kW, it brought more displacement, more torque, and a stronger overall performance envelope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The LS2 didn\u2019t just improve numbers\u2014it improved usability. It delivered smoother power delivery and better real-world drivability, especially in heavier HSV applications like the Senator and GTS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This engine set the foundation for what would become the LS3 and LSA developments in later generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What made the VZ HSVs so compelling wasn\u2019t just power\u2014it was the way they delivered it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was still a mechanical honesty to these cars. Steering feedback wasn\u2019t filtered to death, throttle response was immediate, and the chassis communicated clearly what was happening beneath you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ride quality varied depending on model\u2014Clubsports were firm but usable, Senators were more compliant, and GTS models leaned heavily toward aggressive damping and road grip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Interesting Facts<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The VZ GTS is often regarded as one of the last truly \u201craw\u201d HSV flagship sedans before technology significantly reshaped the driving experience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Early LS1-powered HSVs are now increasingly valued for their slightly more aggressive, less refined character compared to LS2 models.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Maloo from this era helped cement the performance ute segment as uniquely Australian, with very few global equivalents.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wagon variants remain highly sought after due to rarity and practicality, particularly in Clubsport R8 form.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Many enthusiasts consider the VZ Senator one of the best \u201csleeper\u201d HSVs ever built due to its understated styling.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the VE arrived in 2006, it brought progress in every measurable way.
