Based on the facelifted Commodore VY platform, this generation of Holden Special Vehicles represents a moment where HSV refined its formula rather than reinvented it. The result was a range of cars that felt sharper, more aggressive, and more complete than anything that came before it in the VT/VX.

The VY Commodore itself was an evolution of the VX platform, with subtle styling updates, improved suspension tuning, and incremental drivetrain refinements. HSV took this base and sharpened it further, focusing on performance, stance, and driver engagement.

The VY HSV range followed a structured performance ladder, offering something for nearly every type of enthusiast—from entry-level muscle to flagship sedans and performance utes.

The VY HSV range was powered exclusively by the 5.7-litre LS1 V8, but by this stage, it was anything but basic.

5.7L LS1 V8 (HSV Tuned)

In HSV specification, the LS1 produced around 260kW–285kW, depending on model and calibration.

While those numbers might not sound outrageous by modern standards, the character of the engine is what defined it. It delivered strong mid-range torque, a sharp throttle response, and a distinct exhaust note that became synonymous with early-2000s HSV performance.

By the VY generation, HSV had fully extracted the potential of the LS1. Improvements in intake, exhaust, ECU tuning, and cooling meant this version of the engine was the most refined and usable yet.

It was also the final chapter of LS1 dominance before the LS2 took over in the next generation.

Interesting Facts

  • The VY GTS is widely regarded as one of the most complete LS1 HSV applications ever produced.
  • The HSV GTO coupe helped reintroduce the Monaro shape to global markets under different branding.
  • Wagon variants are now increasingly sought after due to rarity and practicality.
  • The Maloo from this era helped solidify the performance ute segment internationally.
  • Many enthusiasts consider VY HSVs to have the ideal balance between modern usability and old-school driving feel.

The VY HSV series doesn’t rely on headline-grabbing innovations or record-breaking performance figures. Instead, its strength lies in balance. It refined what HSV had been building throughout the VT and VX eras and delivered it in its most complete form.

It was the last stage of the LS1 story, the final expression of that early-2000s Australian muscle car formula before everything began to evolve more rapidly.

Today, the VY HSV stands as a reminder of a time when performance cars were still mechanical, wonderfully imperfect, and built with a very clear purpose: to make driving feel exciting every single time you turned the key.
