By the time the VX Commodore rolled in at the turn of the millennium, Holden’s performance division had already been through its learning curve. The VT had reintroduced the Commodore as a modern car, and the VX refined it.

The HSV VX series, built from 2000 to 2002, laid the groundwork for everything HSV would become in the 2000s.

The VX Commodore itself was an evolution of the VT platform, with revised styling, improved suspension geometry, and incremental improvements in build quality and drivability.

For Holden Special Vehicles, it was an opportunity to take an already solid foundation and sharpen it further. HSV didn’t reinvent the wheel here—they refined it, strengthened it, and gave it more attitude.

The VX HSV range offered a structured lineup that catered to a broad spectrum of buyers, from performance newcomers to hardcore enthusiasts.

The VX HSV generation is particularly important because it fully embraced the new-generation GM V8: the LS1.

5.7L LS1 V8

The LS1 was a game-changer for HSV. Producing around 250kW–255kW in early VX HSV tuning, it brought more refinement, better efficiency, and stronger mid-range torque compared to the outgoing 5.0-litre Holden V8.

The LS1 was smoother, more flexible, and more responsive across the rev range. It gave the VX HSVs a level of drivability that earlier generations struggled to match.

It also set the foundation for the later LS2, LS3, and LSA engines that would define HSV for the next decade.

tarted perfecting.
