When Holden Special Vehicles unveiled the Gen-F series in 2013, it wasn’t just another update to the HSV lineup—it was the final, full-blooded evolution of Australian-built performance sedans, utes, and wagons. Based on the VF Commodore platform, the Gen-F range represented the peak of HSV engineering before the curtain slowly fell on local manufacturing. It was bold, technologically advanced, brutally powerful, and unmistakably Australian.

The Gen-F range launched in May 2013, built on the highly refined VF Holden Commodore architecture. HSV didn’t just tweak the donor car—they reshaped it. New front and rear fascias, aggressive aero enhancements, unique lighting signatures, and 20-inch wheels across the range gave the cars a more muscular, cohesive identity than previous E-Series HSVs.

Inside, the VF’s already modern cabin was elevated with HSV-specific trim, sports seating, enhanced instrumentation, and the much-improved Enhanced Driver Interface (EDI) system, which displayed real-time performance data such as G-forces, power delivery, and engine output.

The Gen-F lineup was one of the most diverse HSV offerings ever produced, catering to everything from luxury touring to full-blown super-sedan performance.

The Gen-F range offered two key V8 powertrains depending on model grade.

6.2L LS3 V8 (Naturally Aspirated)

Used in ClubSport, Maloo, Senator, and Grange models, the LS3 delivered outputs ranging from approximately 317kW to 340kW, depending on specification and tuning.

It was known for its linear power delivery, strong mid-range torque, and classic small-block character—an engine that rewarded driving enthusiasm without overwhelming electronic interference.

6.2L Supercharged LSA V8 (GTS)

The crown jewel of Gen-F engineering was the supercharged LSA V8, exclusive to the GTS.

  • 430kW (585hp)
  • 740Nm torque

Paired with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, the LSA transformed the GTS into a true super-sedan capable of rivaling European exotics of its era.

With magnetic ride control, launch control, and HSV’s Driver Preference Dial, it wasn’t just fast in a straight line—it was dynamically sophisticated in a way earlier HSVs never fully achieved.

The Gen-F series marked a significant leap forward for HSV in terms of technology integration.

Key highlights included:

  • Magnetic Ride Control (MRC) for adaptive damping
  • Driver Preference Dial adjusting steering, suspension, exhaust, and stability systems
  • Electronic Torque Vectoring
  • Head-Up Display (in higher trims)
  • Forward Collision Alert & Lane Departure Warning
  • Bi-modal exhaust systems that could shift from refined to aggressive instantly

This blend of performance hardware and modern electronics positioned the Gen-F as the most advanced HSV generation to date.

Interesting Facts

  • The GTS was the most powerful HSV sedan ever produced at the time, cementing its reputation as Australia’s ultimate muscle car.
  • Despite its size, the GTS could accelerate like a European sports sedan thanks to its supercharged torque delivery.
  • The Maloo R8 remains one of the fastest production utes ever built globally.
  • HSV offered wagon variants (Tourer) across performance models—something almost unheard of in global performance markets.
  • The Gen-F platform would later evolve into Gen-F2 and the extreme GTSR, which marked the final chapter of HSV performance tuning.

The HSV Gen-F series wasn’t just another Commodore-based performance range—it was the culmination of 30 years of Australian performance engineering. Today, these cars are more than just performance machines. They’re collector pieces, cultural icons, and reminders of a time when Australia built some of the world’s most characterful performance vehicles.
