VN VP VR VS Commodore Repair Manual

An OBD2 scanner is a great way to correctly diagnose issues and faults in newer model cars (mid 90’s onwards).

The VR Commodore was a huge moment for Holden.

Released in 1993, the VR took the VN/VP formula and cleaned it up properly. It looked smoother, drove better, stopped better, and felt far more refined overall. Holden also introduced major safety improvements, including standard driver airbags on some models — a big deal at the time.

For a lot of Australians, the VR Commodore became the ultimate everyday car. Reliable, roomy, rear-wheel drive, cheap to fix and practically impossible to kill.

And honestly, that reputation still holds up today.

You’ll still spot VRs:

  • cruising country highways
  • towing trailers
  • parked at burnout events
  • hidden away in sheds waiting for restoration
  • surviving as daily drivers long after they probably should’ve retired

But the reality is these cars are now over 30 years old. Rubber seals perish, wiring gets brittle, interiors fall apart and neglected maintenance eventually catches up with even the toughest Holden.

Here are the most common VR Commodore problems owners and buyers should know about.

1. Cooling System Problems

If you buy a VR Commodore, expect cooling system work at some point.

The Buick V6 and later Ecotec engines are tough, but overheating can kill them quickly. Most VRs are now running ageing radiators, tired hoses and old thermostats that should’ve been replaced years ago.

A small coolant leak today can become a major overheating problem tomorrow.

Common symptoms

  • Rising temperature gauge
  • Coolant leaks
  • Sweet coolant smell
  • Steam from engine bay
  • Heater problems

Water pumps and radiator end tanks are especially common failure points on older VRs.

2. Automatic Transmission Wear

The 4L60E automatic fitted to many VR Commodores is generally reliable, but age and abuse eventually take their toll.

A lot of VRs lived hard lives:

  • towing boats
  • doing skids
  • carrying tradie tools
  • surviving years of stop-start traffic

Transmission servicing was often ignored completely.

Common symptoms

  • Slipping gears
  • Harsh shifting
  • Delayed engagement
  • Shuddering during acceleration
  • Transmission fluid leaks

A healthy VR auto should still shift smoothly, even with higher kilometres.

3. Oil Leaks

Like almost every old Holden, VR Commodores are famous for leaking oil.

The engines themselves are usually very durable, but ageing seals and gaskets eventually start weeping from everywhere. Some owners simply accept it as part of the ownership experience.

Common leak areas include:

  • rocker cover gaskets
  • rear main seals
  • sump gaskets
  • timing cover seals

Common symptoms

  • Oil spots under the car
  • Burning oil smell
  • Dirty engine bay
  • Smoke near exhaust manifolds

Most minor leaks are manageable, but bigger ones should be fixed before oil levels become dangerously low.

4. Power Steering Leaks

Power steering systems in ageing VRs are another regular headache.

Hoses crack, pumps wear out and steering racks eventually begin leaking after decades of use. Many owners first notice the problem after finding red fluid stains under the car.

Common symptoms

  • Heavy steering
  • Whining noises while turning
  • Power steering fluid leaks
  • Steering shudder at low speed

Ignoring leaks for too long can destroy the steering pump completely.

5. Suspension & Steering Wear

The VR Commodore rides surprisingly well for a 1990s Aussie sedan, but worn suspension can make them feel loose and floaty.

After 30 years on Australian roads, most VRs have worn:

  • control arm bushes
  • ball joints
  • sway bar links
  • shock absorbers
  • steering components

Lowered cars tend to wear components even faster again.

Common symptoms

  • Clunking noises
  • Wandering steering
  • Uneven tyre wear
  • Steering vibration
  • Poor handling feel

A fresh suspension rebuild can completely change how a VR drives.

6. Electrical Gremlins

Old Holden electrics can be… unpredictable.

VR Commodores commonly develop electrical faults as wiring, switches and modules age. Add in decades of alarm systems, stereo installs and questionable backyard wiring jobs, and things get interesting quickly.

Common issues include:

  • power window failures
  • central locking problems
  • faulty dashboard lights
  • battery drain
  • intermittent starting issues

Common symptoms

  • Flat batteries
  • Windows not working
  • Random warning lights
  • Remote locking faults
  • Electrical accessories failing intermittently

Poor earth connections are responsible for many strange VR electrical problems.

7. Interior Wear & Sagging Roof Lining

Time hasn’t been kind to many VR interiors.

Sun exposure destroys roof lining adhesive, plastics become brittle, and seat bolsters wear through after decades of use. It’s rare to find a completely tidy original VR interior now.

Common issues include:

  • sagging roof lining
  • cracked dashboards
  • broken interior handles
  • faded plastics
  • rattles and squeaks

A clean interior makes a huge difference to how these cars feel overall.

Common symptoms

  • Roof lining hanging down
  • Loose trim pieces
  • Sun-damaged plastics
  • Interior rattles

Thankfully, replacement trim parts and retrim kits are still fairly easy to source.

8. Fuel Pump Failures

Fuel pumps are another common weak point on ageing VR Commodores.

Many original pumps are now decades old and can fail without much warning, especially during hot weather.

Common symptoms

  • Hard starting
  • Sudden stalling
  • Engine cutting out
  • Fuel pump whining noise
  • No-start condition

Cars that have been sitting unused for long periods are especially vulnerable.
