VT VX VY VZ Commodore Repair Manual
The VY Commodore is the fourth model to use the Ecotec V6 and the third to use the LS1 V8. Generally speaking the bugs have been worked out, but with updating electrics and other gadgets problems may not show themselves at first.
An OBD2 scanner is a great way to correctly diagnose issues and faults in newer model cars (mid 90’s onwards).
The VY Commodore might just be one of the best all-rounders Holden ever built. It arrived in 2002 as a major update of the VX platform, but Holden did far more than just tweak the headlights and bumpers. The VY felt tighter, more refined and far more modern on the road. It also landed right in the sweet spot for many Holden fans — modern enough to live with every day, but still simple enough to work on in the shed with basic tools and a workshop manual.
Here are the most common VY Commodore problems owners and buyers should know about.
1. Ecotec V6 Oil Leaks
If you’ve owned an Ecotec-powered Commodore, you already know the deal — they love marking their territory.
The 3.8-litre Ecotec V6 is one of Holden’s toughest engines, but oil leaks are incredibly common as seals and gaskets age. Most leaks aren’t catastrophic, but they can become messy and frustrating over time.
The good news? Parts are cheap, and most repairs are straightforward.
Common leak areas
- rocker cover gaskets
- rear main seals
- sump gaskets
- oil pressure switches
Common symptoms
- Oil spots under the car
- Burning oil smell
- Smoke from engine bay
- Gradually dropping oil levels
Many VYs will continue running happily for years with small leaks, but ignoring them completely eventually creates bigger problems.

2. Automatic Transmission Wear
The VY’s automatic transmissions are generally reliable, but plenty have had a hard life by now.
Fleet use, towing, lack of servicing and years of stop-start traffic all take their toll. A neglected transmission can quickly turn a cheap Commodore into an expensive project.
Many VY owners still believe in the old “sealed for life” transmission myth — which absolutely hasn’t helped.
Common symptoms
- Slipping gears
- Delayed engagement
- Hard shifting
- Transmission shudder
- Fluid leaks
A healthy VY auto should shift smoothly without hesitation.

3. Cooling System Problems
Like most older Holdens, cooling system issues are one of the biggest reliability concerns in the VY Commodore.
Plastic radiator tanks become brittle over time, heater hoses split, and thermostats eventually fail. Overheating an Ecotec or LS-powered VY is something you want to avoid at all costs.
Many cars now still run original cooling components that are decades old.
Common symptoms
- Coolant leaks
- Overheating
- Temperature fluctuations
- Sweet coolant smell
- Low coolant warnings
Preventative maintenance here can save thousands later.

4. Front Suspension Wear
The VY Commodore rides well even by modern standards, but worn front-end components can completely ruin the experience.
After years on Australian roads, most VYs have worn:
- control arm bushes
- tie rod ends
- sway bar links
- shock absorbers
Lowered cars usually suffer even more.
Common symptoms
- Clunking noises
- Steering vibration
- Uneven tyre wear
- Wandering steering
- Poor ride quality
A fresh suspension setup transforms how these cars drive.

5. BCM & Electrical Gremlins
The Body Control Module (BCM) is responsible for many electrical functions in the VY, and faults here are surprisingly common as these cars age.
Electrical issues on VYs are rarely catastrophic — just incredibly annoying.
Owners commonly report:
- power window failures
- central locking problems
- interior light issues
- key programming faults
- random battery drain
Sometimes the culprit is simply a weak battery or poor earth connection.
Common symptoms
- Windows not working
- Flat battery
- Random warning lights
- Remote locking issues
- Intermittent electrical faults
Tracking electrical faults in older Holdens can sometimes feel like chasing ghosts.

6. Diff Whine & Driveline Clunks
Rear-wheel-drive Commodores eventually develop driveline noises — it’s almost tradition at this point.
VY SS models and hard-driven V6s can develop:
- diff whine
- tailshaft vibration
- clunking during gear changes
Burnouts, towing and years of abuse naturally accelerate wear.
Common symptoms
- Whining during acceleration
- Clunk when selecting drive
- Vibrations at speed
- Diff oil leaks
Some mild driveline noise is common in older Commodores, but loud whining usually means wear is advancing.

7. Sagging Roof Lining
If there’s one thing almost guaranteed on a VY Commodore, it’s a sagging roof lining.
Australian heat destroys old adhesive over time, and eventually the fabric starts hanging down like a hammock.
It’s not mechanical, but it absolutely dates the interior.
Common symptoms
- Roof fabric drooping
- Loose interior trim
- Falling pillar material
The good news is that replacement kits and retrimming services are widely available.

8. Fuel Pump Failures
Fuel pumps are another common wear item on ageing VYs.
Many owners first notice issues during hot weather or after the car has been sitting for extended periods.
Failing pumps can leave you stranded without warning.
Common symptoms
- Hard starting
- Engine stalling
- Loss of power
- Fuel pump whining noise
- Car not starting
High-kilometre VYs are especially vulnerable if the original pump is still fitted.

9. High Fuel Consumption
Nobody buys a VY Commodore expecting Prius fuel economy, but some cars become noticeably thirstier than they should be.
Common causes include:
- worn oxygen sensors
- dirty throttle bodies
- vacuum leaks
- tired spark plugs
- ageing ignition components
Heavy right feet don’t help either — especially in LS1-powered SS models.
Common symptoms
- Poor fuel economy
- Rough idle
- Hesitation
- Black exhaust smoke
A neglected VY often responds surprisingly well to a major service.

Is the VY Commodore Reliable?
Absolutely — and that’s a huge part of why they’re still everywhere.
The VY sits in a sweet spot where:
- parts are cheap
- repairs are simple
- aftermarket support is massive
- mechanical knowledge is everywhere
A well-maintained VY can comfortably handle huge kilometres.
