Holden RB Gemini – Trim Levels

RB Gemini

The Holden RB Gemini marked a notable shift in the Gemini story in Australia: for the first time, the model transitioned from the rear-wheel-drive layout to a front-wheel-drive. Produced from May 1985 until 1987, the RB provided improved fuel economy and modern packaging, aligning more closely with European-derived small cars of the era.

RB Gemini Trim Levels & Variants

Unlike some earlier Geminis that offered wagons, coupes and vans, the RB Gemini was exclusively a four-door sedan model lineup — focused on simple, economical personal transport.

1. Gemini SL (Standard Luxury)

The entry trim for the RB series, the SL brought a balance of practicality and equipment:

  • Positioning: Base “standard luxury” offering
  • Body Style: 4-door sedan
  • Highlights: Comfortable interior trim, reliable basic equipment set suitable for daily commuting and family use

Priced competitively at launch, the SL was designed to appeal to buyers stepping up from budget models but still prioritising value and ease of use.

2. Gemini SL/X (Enhanced Trim)

The SL/X sat above the SL and added upgraded style and kit:

  • Body Style: 4-door sedan
  • Key Features:
    • Better interior materials and trim quality
    • Often improved exterior detailing
    • More engaging driving feel thanks to standard sportier transmission options

The SL/X was typically the most popular choice for mainstream buyers looking for a bit more comfort, style and driving involvement.

3. Gemini SL/E (Top-Tier Variant)

At the top of the RB range was the SL/E — a step closer to premium compact sedans of the era:

  • Body Style: 4-door sedan
  • Premium Enhancements:
    • Upgraded interior appointments
    • Options such as power steering
    • Alloy wheels and more comprehensive stereo or convenience features
  • Positioning: Best suited for buyers who wanted everyday practicality plus a sharper feature set

This trim offered the most comfortable and well-equipped RB Gemini package.

4. Optional Accessory Packs (“Fashion” & “Action”)

Towards the end of the RB’s run, Holden introduced accessory appearance packs such as:

  • Fashion Pack – added interior enhancements and trim enhancements
  • Action Pack – sport-oriented styling including alloy wheels and rear spoiler

These didn’t change the core trim names but provided extra style appeal for younger or style-focused drivers.

Engine Options

In its Australian market run, the RB Gemini featured a single petrol engine that reflected Holden’s push for efficiency and everyday usability.

1.5-Litre Isuzu Four-Cylinder Petrol Engine

  • Code: 4XC1
  • Configuration: Front-mounted, longitudinal, inline-4, water-cooled, SOHC
  • Displacement: 1,471 cc (~1.5 L)
  • Power Output: ~54 kW @ 5,600 rpm
  • Torque: ~116 Nm @ 3,600 rpm
  • Fuel Delivery: Two-barrel carburettor with automatic choke

This engine was paired with RB Gemini models across the range and delivered a good balance of fuel economy, low-cost servicing and daily usability — ideal for urban traffic and highway cruising in a compact sedan.

Note: Unlike some earlier Gemini generations, no diesel option was offered in the RB series.

Transmission Options

Holden offered two main transmission choices for the RB Gemini to cater to different driving preferences:

5-Speed Manual Transmission

  • Standard on many SL and SL/X models
  • Fully synchronised 5-speed gearbox
  • Benefits: Greater driver control, better fuel efficiency on the highway, and a more engaging driving experience for enthusiasts

3-Speed TriMatic Automatic

  • Optional on most trims
  • Three-speed automatic with floor-mounted shifter
  • Benefits: Easier driving in heavy traffic and everyday commuting, particularly for urban drivers

Front-Wheel Drive & Chassis Notes

Unlike the earlier, rear-wheel-drive Gemini models, the RB Gemini adopted a front-wheel-drive layout. This change provided:

  • Improved interior space packaging
  • Better traction in wet conditions
  • A more modern driving feel common in compact cars of the mid-1980s

The ride and handling were tailored to everyday comfort and ease of control, rather than sports-oriented dynamics — perfectly in line with the RB’s market positioning.
