The HSV VN series, built between 1988 and 199. Based on the original VN Commodore, this first HSV generation set the tone for everything that followed: big engines, bold styling, and a focus on turning everyday Australian sedans into something far more serious.
The VN Commodore itself was a major shift for Holden. Larger, more modern, and more internationally influenced than its predecessors, it gave HSV its first genuinely contemporary platform to work with.
For Holden Special Vehicles, this was a blank canvas. There was no established performance hierarchy yet, no decades-old identity to lean on—just an opportunity to define what a factory-backed Australian performance division could be.
The VN HSV range was relatively straightforward compared to later generations.
The VN HSV series was powered by one core engine family: the Holden 5.0-litre V8. In VN HSV specification, outputs typically sat around 180kW–200kW depending on variant and tune.
But raw figures don’t tell the full story. This engine was about character. It was rough around the edges, responsive, and deeply mechanical. It delivered torque in a way that suited Australian roads—strong low-end pull, steady mid-range, and a soundtrack that made every acceleration feel significant.
It was also a platform still being developed. Later generations would refine it heavily, but the VN had an honesty that many enthusiasts still appreciate today.
Driving a VN HSV today is like stepping into a time when performance cars were built around driver input rather than electronic intervention.
Interesting Facts
- The VN-based Group A SV is one of the most collectible Australian performance cars ever produced.
- Early HSV VN models were heavily influenced by motorsport homologation requirements.
- The Clubsport and Senator names first began to form their long-term identity during this generation.
- Many VN HSVs were still relatively raw in build quality, adding to their analogue charm today.
- This era represents one of the last times Australian performance cars were developed with minimal electronic assistance.
Everything that followed—VR refinement, VS maturity, VT modernisation, and the LS-powered golden era—can be traced back to the groundwork laid with the VN.
Today, VN HSVs are valued not just as classic Australian performance cars, but as the starting point of an entire automotive legacy.
