The EJ Holden, introduced in July 1962, replaced the EK.

It featured the biggest set of cosmetic changes for Holden at the time of its release. The car was a complete make over of the previous model EK. It looked nothing like it cosmetically. The car was lower, flatter and featured a more ‘American’ design. It was larger and would feature a number of upgrades to the previous model.

Revisions made to the EJ’s automatic transmission made for a smoother ride, the steering, ride and handling saw drastic improvements too.

The same ‘gray engine’ that had been in service since the original 48-215 would continue being fitted with an automatic or a manual transmission. It would be the last Holden to be fitted with the grey engine. It would also be the last family size Holden to be available with only one engine option.

The ‘Premier’ variant was available for the first time on the EJ. It consisted of a number of luxury upgrades such as leather bucket seats, heater, demister and automatic transmission. The Premier as a high end trim option for buyers would expand Holdens target market to include high end executive and limousine buyers.

A grand total of 154 811 EJ’s rolled off the assembly line between July 1962 and August 1963, after which the now famous EH Holden would be introduced.

The 1 millionth Holden ever produced rolled off the production line on the 26th of October, 1962. It was an EJ Premier.
