The EH Holden replaced the EJ Holden in August 1963. While only featuring a minor facelift compared to the previous model, change with the EH is the introduction of an all new engine, the red engine. An inline 6 which was larger and produced more power than the previous Grey 6.

The ‘Red engine’ had a larger capacity of 149 cubic inch (2.4L) or an even bigger 179 cubic inch (2.9L) engine. They were available with either a 3 speed manual or an Automatic Transmission. The previous ‘Grey engine’ had been in service since the inception of Holdens original 48-215 in 1948, 15 years ago.

It was also the first Holden to offer two engine choices. EH prices started at $2 102.

The dimensions are as follows:

Wheelbase: 106 Inches (2692 mm)

Length: 177.6 Inches (4511mm)

Width: 68 Inches (1727mm)

Height: 58.2 Inches (1478mm)

Kerb Weight: 2464 lbs (1118kg)

The ‘Red’ engine was well overdue for Holden. The previous ‘Grey’ engine had been used since the original 48-215 Holden which was first released 15 years ago in 1948. The ‘red’ engine was more powerful and more fuel efficient than the ‘grey’ engine.  The EH and the new engine were well received by the Australian buying public, the car sold in large numbers.

256,959 EH’s rolled off the production line from 1963 to 1965. The EH is arguably one of, if not the most iconic Holdens ever produced. Very few Holden models outsold it, in fact very few Australian cars, ever outsold it.
