VK Commodore VIN Decoding

This page contains all (hopefully) the information you will need to decode your own VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) for a VK Commodore.

The VK VIN contains 14 digits. It can be broken down into 8 parts. See the example below

8L69KEL114556K

8          L          69       K         E         L1       14556      K

Part 1 is the car manufacturer, 8=GMH

Part 2 is the variant, L=Berlina

Part 3 is comprised of 2 digits and tells us the body style of the car, 69 = Sedan

Part 4 tells us the engine, K = 3.3L EFI inline 6

Part 5 tells us what year the car was made, E = 1985

Part 6 is comprised of 2 digits and tells us where the car was made, L1 = Adelaide

Part 7 is made up of 5 digits and is a unique, sequential build number

Part 8 tells us what series the car is from, K = VK

So what we have here is a 1985 3.3L EFI VK Berlina Sedan that was made in Adelaide. All VK

First Digit tells us the manufacturer

8 – GMH (General Motors Holden)

Second Digit is the model variant

Variant

K – SL

L= Berlina

X=Calais

Digits 3 and 4 tell us the body style

69=Sedan

N=1.9ltr 4 cyl

D= 2.85 6 cyl

L= 3.3 EST

K= 3.3 EFI

T=5.0L

Digit 6 tells us what year the car was manufactured

F – 1986

Digits 7 and 8 tell us where the car was made *

H1to H4= Brisbane
J1 to J9=Melbourne
L1 to L9= Adelaide
Z1 to Z9 =New Zealand

(* Just going off a rumour here but I have been told that there were up to 4 different assembly lines in the Brisbane factory hence why it goes H1 to H4 and from 1 to 9 for the other plants. I don’t know this for sure so please don’t take it as a fact as it may be incorrect. If anyone can confirm or deny this I’d love to hear from you.)

Digits 9 to 13 are your sequential build number

Digit 14 is the model type. In this case, K = VK
