A quarter of a million VX Commodores were produced in under 2 years. Although most are great, with production being that high (compare this rate of production to the 130 000 VY’s produced in the same amount of time) there are bound to be a number of build quality issues simply because of how fast they were coming off the assembly line.
Whirring noise coming from V6 pulley
V8 rough idle
V8 loose engine cover, causing rattling noise
V8 excessive vibration which can lead to loose bolts and cracks in mountings and fixtures
Squeaking noises coming from clutch
Vibration coming from the transmission
Difficult manual transmission shifts
Premature tyre wear, both front and rear from poor wheel alignment
Handbrake shoes can stick causing a scraping noise
Brake lines can press into the firewall and cause a rattling noise when driving
Issues starting caused by ineffective fuel pump relays or body control modules
Traction control and check engine warning lights can come on, despite there actually being no problem
Premature indicator globes blowing
V6 engine can misfire
Steering system leaks and noises and excessive play
Front sway bar link rubbers can fail
Air conditioning vibration and/or excessive noise
Ineffective heater
Water leaking into boot
Water jets for front windscreen aimed too high Door seals coming unstuck
